GPR Concrete Scanning in Manchester
Manchester gives us two very different scanning problems, often on the same week's diary. The city-centre towers — Deansgate Square, NOMA, First Street, the St John's quarter — have put a great deal of post-tensioned and transfer-slab construction into the ground, where pre-drill scanning is non-negotiable. The cotton mills and cast-iron-framed warehouses being converted across the city almost never come with a reliable as-built record. Different buildings, same conclusion: know what's inside the slab before you cut it.
Two instruments, because the stock demands it. On the modern towers we lead with the Proceq GP8000, whose stepped-frequency continuous-wave radar gives the resolution and usable depth to read thick transfer slabs and post-tensioned floors. On the conversions — no drawings, often a congested and irregular historic slab — the Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan images rebar, conduit and voids in real time so we can mark a safe drilling pattern on the spot. Where cover depth or bar diameter has to be confirmed at shallow depth, we add a Hilti PS 300 Ferroscan. Running all three means we match the kit to the structure rather than forcing one antenna to do everything.
The output is the same wherever the slab came from: a depth-indicative map of rebar layout, likely post-tension positions, embedded services, voids and thickness — marked on the slab and delivered as a measured record your team can drill, core or fix against. GPR work follows the methodology underpinning the EuroGPR Certified Surveyor scheme.

- Photographs of marked-up areas
- Surveyor sign-off and method statement
Manchester questions, answered.
- Can you scan post-tension floors in the city-centre residential towers?
- Yes — locating likely tendon positions before drilling is central to our pre-drill work, and the Proceq GP8000 is well suited to the thicker slabs in these buildings.
- We're converting a mill with no drawings — can you map the reinforcement?
- Yes. With no reliable as-built, GPR imaging with the Hilti PS 1000, backed by ferro scanning for cover and diameter, is the usual first step before any structural fixing.
- Do you charge travel from London?
- For booked programmes, travel is itemised transparently in the quote; for smaller jobs we batch North West visits to keep mobilisation efficient.
- How quickly can you get to a Manchester site?
- Same-working-day quote; on site within days for most jobs, sooner for urgent pre-drill work.
