We work across South Wales from our London base. This year our surveyors have been in Swansea, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest, and we have been asked to price work in Cardiff. Cardiff is on the same M4 run.

We scan slabs, walls and columns before anyone drills, cores or cuts: rebar layout, likely post-tension tendon positions, embedded services, voids and slab thickness. Positions are marked on the concrete before we leave. Where the question is cover depth or bar spacing, we add a Ferroscan survey. The Cardiff work we are asked about is coring and fixing positions in post-tensioned floors, fit-outs in city-centre offices, and checking how a floor is built before alterations in a flat.
Cardiff buildings. The city centre has a lot of concrete office stock from the 1960s to the 1980s now being refurbished or converted, often with no reliable drawings. Cardiff Bay has residential towers and commercial buildings on post-tensioned and heavily reinforced floors. Both are places where a blind core is a real risk, to a tendon, a bar or a buried service.
What you get. Marks on the concrete at every position before we leave, and a report with each scan area, what was found, depth-indicative positions and the instrument used, signed by the surveyor who did the scan. A DXF comes with it where your engineer or installer needs to set out from it.
How we cover Cardiff. We are based in Canary Wharf. A surveyor travels the M4 the day before, and travel and accommodation are itemised on the quote. The promises are the same as in London: a call back the same working day, marks on the slab before we leave, and the report within 5 working days.
