Scan data you can put your name to.

You need to know what is in the element before you can say what it will carry. We give you the reinforcement layout, the cover, the bar size estimate and the tendon positions, with the method and the kit stated, the calibration recorded, and a note of what the instrument could not resolve. It is written so you can quote it, not so you have to re-interpret it.

What engineers ask us for

The questions we are usually asked.

  • 01

Reinforcement mapping for an existing-structure assessment

  • 02

Cover depth surveys for durability or compliance

  • 03

Bar diameter and spacing for a load check

  • 04

Post-tension tendon location before an opening is designed

  • 05

    Slab thickness and void checks

  • 06

Pull-out and core testing where a strength number is needed

The report

How the report is built.

  • Scope as agreed with you, not with the contractor
  • Kit named, serial and calibration date recorded
  • Positions and depths with the stated tolerance of the instrument
  • Plotted against the design where you supply drawings
  • Unresolved areas marked as unresolved, not guessed
  • DXF/DWG on the same grid as the PDF
  • Signed by the surveyor, who will talk it through with you
The limits

What the instruments can and cannot tell you.

GPR gives likely position and depth from reflections. It does not give bar diameter, and it cannot see through a steel deck. Ferroscan gives cover and spacing directly and bar diameter as an estimate within a range. Neither gives strength. We say which tool answers which question before we quote.

FAQs

Questions, answered.

Can you work to my specification or method statement?
Yes. Send it with the booking and we will confirm what the instruments can and cannot meet before we quote. Where a specification asks for something GPR or Ferroscan cannot deliver, we say so rather than agree and fall short.
What tolerance should I quote from your data?
The manufacturer's stated tolerance for the instrument, which is printed in the report with the kit and calibration date. For the Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan, depth accuracy is plus or minus 10 mm under 100 mm and 15 percent beyond. For the Hilti PS 300 Ferroscan, localisation is 1 percent plus or minus 3 mm. Site conditions affect both, and the report says where they did.
Can you survey a soffit, a column or a wall?
Yes, where we can reach the face safely. Access equipment is agreed at booking. If we cannot reach it safely, we tell you before the day, not on it.
Can you provide a UKAS strength result?
Yes. Pull-out testing and core sampling are part of what we do, and cores are tested by an independent UKAS laboratory. The laboratory's certificate goes with our report.
Will the surveyor talk to me after the report?
Yes. The surveyor who did the scan signs the report and will talk it through with you.
