GPR Concrete Scanning in Swansea

In July 2026 we were at Langland Bay, near Mumbles, scanning the balconies of a residential building: balustrades, supports and upstands, 26 scan areas in all, with Ferroscan and GPR. It is one of several jobs we have done in South and West Wales this year.

What we scanned and why. Balconies on coastal buildings take a beating from salt and weather. Before repairs, new balustrade fixings or an engineer's assessment, the question is what reinforcement is in the edge elements and how much concrete covers it. We used a Hilti PS 300 Ferroscan for cover depth and bar spacing, and GPR where we needed to see deeper or locate other embedded metal. Each of the 26 scan areas was recorded on its own, so the engineer could read the result element by element.

Elsewhere in Wales. Our first job, in May 2026, was a college mezzanine slab in Haverfordwest. In September we ran ground GPR and a utility records search for a contractor at a site in Pembroke Dock. The M4 west is a road we know.

How we cover Swansea. We are based in Canary Wharf. A surveyor travels the day before, and travel and accommodation are itemised on the quote. The promises are the same as in London: a call back the same working day, marks on the slab before we leave, and the report within 5 working days.

What we find in Swansea buildings

Seafront blocks from the 1960s and 1970s with cantilevered balconies, university and public buildings on reinforced frames, and newer waterfront residential on post-tensioned floors. On older coastal buildings, low cover on edge elements is exactly what a cover survey is there to find.

FAQs

Swansea questions, answered.

Can you survey balconies on an occupied block?
Yes. Scanning is non-intrusive, so residents can stay put. We need access to each balcony, so we agree the order with the building manager before we arrive.
Do you work elsewhere in South and West Wales?
Yes. This year we have worked in Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock as well as Swansea, and we quote for jobs anywhere in Wales.
How is travel to Swansea charged?
Travel and accommodation are separate lines on the quote, so you can see exactly what they add to the survey.
